tion contained a causality limitation in theAbstract orDiscussion, editorial, or journal press release (P < .001).However, for the 18articles that contained thecausality limitation in theAbstract or discussion, editorial, or journal press release, themedian proportion of associated news stories that reported the causality limitation was only 9% (range, 0%-100%). Among 31 news stories that reported a causality limitation, 16 (52%) included a disclaimer. Study authors were responsible for 18 (58%) of these limitation statements but also for 14 (88%) of the disclaimers.

Defining Prolonged Dwell Time: When Are Advanced Inferior Vena Cava Filter Retrieval Techniques Necessary? An Analysis in 762 Procedures.

BACKGROUND Despite growth in placement of retrievable inferior vena cava filters, retrieval rates remain low. Filters with extended implantation times present a challenge to retrieval, where standard techniques often fail. The development of advanced retrieval techniques has positively impacted retrieval of retrievable inferior vena cava filters with prolonged dwell times; however, there is no ...

Defining Prolonged Dwell Time: When Are Advanced Inferior Vena Cava Filter Retrieval Techniques Necessary?

Retrievable inferior vena cava filters (rIVCFs) were developed to provide temporary protection from pulmonary embolism while minimizing the risk of filter-related deep venous thrombosis associated with permanent inferior vena cava filters. In practice, however, the majority of rIVCFs are left in place permanently, with historic retrieval rates as low as 8.5%. Although poor clinical follow-up of...

Late endovascular removal of Günther-Tulip inferior vena cava filter and stent reconstruction of chronic post-thrombotic iliocaval obstruction after 4753 days of filter dwell time: a case report with review of literature

Chronic post-thrombotic obstruction of the inferior vena cava (IVC) or iliocaval junction is an uncommon complication of long indwelling IVC filter. When such an obstruction is symptomatic, endovascular treatment options include stent placement with or without filter retrieval. Filter retrieval becomes increasingly difficult with longer dwell times. We present a case of symptomatic post-thrombo...

Advanced Techniques for Complicated IVC Filter Retrievals: A Clinical Perspective

The development of retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filters and the expansion of accepted placement indications have resulted in a significant rise in the number of IVC filter placements. However, retrieval rates remain low, increasing the likelihood of longer dwell times and complicated retrievals. Interest in advanced IVC filter retrieval techniques has grown, but standardized approaches ...

High-risk retrieval of adherent and chronically implanted IVC filters: techniques for removal and management of thrombotic complications.

PURPOSE To evaluate the safety and efficacy of aggressive techniques for retrieving adherent and chronically implanted inferior vena cava (IVC) filters. MATERIALS AND METHODS A single-center retrospective review was performed on all patients who underwent attempted filter retrieval from October 2007 through October 2008. Patients were included in the study if they had an adherent filter, refr...
